NEW Exihibit!

Local Artist Susan Weinberg Exhibits a collection of her work

at the Eiger-Zaidenweber Holocaust Resource Center (January - June 2012)

Talmud Torah of Minneapolis, the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota, the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest and the Tychman Shapiro Gallery at the Sabes JCC will feature exhibits by local artist Susan Weinberg.

Weinberg's work explores Jewish identity, and asks the question of who will tell Jewish history for future generations. Her work has taken her on a personal journey to Lithuania and Poland which influenced her to create the exhibitions "The Silence Speaks Loudly" and "A Hole in Time." "The Silence Speaks Loudly" is an exploration of how Lithuania deals with its Holocaust history and the traces of the community that remains, while "A Hole in Time" explores the pre-war Jewish Community of Radom, Poland where her family is originally from.

It was her experiences in Radom that led her to Dora Zaidenweber, also once a resident of Radom, who survived the Holocaust. Zaidenweber and Weinberg became good friends and even traveled to Radom in April of 2011 to exhibit Weinberg's work and give Zaidenweber the chance to share her memories of Radom with the current residents.

In addition, Weinberg worked on a series of interviews with Jewish Minnesotans as part of a Jewish Identity and Legacy project, partnering with the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest. The project was funded by an Arts Culture Heritage Fund grant administered by the Minnesota Historical Society. Four of the works hanging in the Resource Center are from this project and reflect the stories of four Jewish Minnesotans who survived the Holocaust.

The Eiger-Zaidenweber Holocaust Resource Center at the Minneapolis Talmud Torah was created by the Eiger and Zaidenweber families to provide a multi-purpose space for teaching and studying about the Holocaust. It was one of the first Holocaust resource centers to offer tours to local schools and community organizations. Susie Chalom, Talmud Torah of Minneapolis Head of School said "We wanted to honor the history of the center and the wishes of the family to make this a viable space, and having Susan's paintings, which are an artistic response to the Holocaust, is a good place to start, since the future of Holocaust education will rely on future generations to tell the stories of the survivors and the six million who did not survive."

Susan Weinberg and Dora Zaidenweber are available to speak to groups who would like to tour the exhibit. Susan can be reached at susan@studio409art.com  The Eiger-Zaidenweber Holocaust Resource Center is located on the second floor of the Barry Family Campus, 4330 South Cedar Lake Road, Minneapolis, 55416.
The Resource Center is open Monday through Thursday 7:30 am to 9 PM Friday 7:30 am to 6 PM. Sunday 9 AM to 1 PM. Closed for Jewish Holidays.
